Squamish cycling goes high tech!
by Jen Segger
I’d like to welcome you to the newest technology when it comes to indoor cycling. Two weeks ago, the first 6 rider multi-rider Compu Trainer set-up arrived here to the Challenge By Choice Studio, the first and only one of it’s kind in Sea to Sky country. So what is the CompuTrainer exactly? Good question.
The MultiRider CompuTrainer cycling method provides an exciting new way for indoor group cycling and racing while at the same time, allowing each rider to focus on individual performance and development goals. Cyclists of ALL levels can ride together at the same time, receive a great workout, especially during the off season, and get back outside when the weather improves with a new and improved level of fitness.
How does it work? Riders bring their own bikes to the studio where they are set up on a stationary wind trainer. Each unit is then connected through a central computer with data being displayed overhead on a wide screen TV. As a coach, we create each riders profile and can assign specific “goals” for that ride session. From time trials to real course video’s, world renowned race courses to hill workouts, riders have access to literally hundreds of different workouts, courses and races to train on. Each rider cycles with their own individual workload while focusing on cadence, power, technique and heart rate.
Over the next few months we will be developing real course profiles that mimic some of the popular races here in town. Data collected through GPS profiles will soon allow you to ride from Vancouver to Whistler without leaving the comfort and warmth (oh yes, and amazing sound system) here in the Lab. You will also be able to ride several of the most popular mountain bike courses of Squamish in the very near future via the CompuTrainer. Get ready to become a master at Bonk Hill!
The cycling lab at the studio also allows single rider use. Through the use of a program called SpinScan, we can analyze your pedaling stroke and inefficiencies. We can determine where the “dead” spots are in your pedal rotation, which leg is dominant, and where the imbalances are. From there, it’s easy to determine where your cycling focus should be in terms of drills and workouts. Blood analysis and watts testing are also offered for cyclists who want to know their true heart rate training zones.
The CompuTrainer is state of the art training that can benefit the weekend rider to the elite cyclist. The goal at Challenge By Choice is to help you with your cycling goals. Whether that be just general riding fitness, improvement in your Test of Metal time, developing the endurance to ride the Gran Fondo, becoming a stronger hill climber or just the desire to school your buddy at the weekly toonie race, the CompuTrainer is the way to go. Make your training this winter fun, enjoyable yet productive.
Come by and check out the Lab at Challenge By Choice and see it for yourself!
We are offering any new person who wants to come ride, their first session is only $10!
