This is fantastic Sue. Great work on educating the public on a fairly confusing issue! We have physios with such a wide variety of letters after their name we could practically spell the whole alphabet.

Great site - great info.

Thanks for posting this. I had read Leo Buscaglia's books back in the 80s and was looking for this story about the ant and sugar. It, along with others (such as the poem "You Didn't") have stuck with me through the years.

Thanks for mentioning that exercise Susanne.
Those tubing exercises are great for the lateral muscles of the ankle that often get "injured" in a sprain- and very easy to do.

I had several ankle sprains years ago until I learned I had to strengthen my ankles. My favourite exercise uses a tube band with handles. You put your forefoot in one of the handles. Put tension on the band, either around your other foot or a chair leg. This will pull your forefoot inward. Keeping your foot extended (not flexed upward) rotate your foot outward.

This is a good reminder for me to start doing these again!

I always make sure I'm up early enough to have a few sips of coffee before a long run. It usually prevents headaches and makes me feel normal because it is part of my normal routine, and it rarely causes other problems : ) though I know that can be an issue for some, especially when nerves play a role on race day.
